Constructed near the dawn of the 20th Century, the businesses 'beneath the streets' relied mainly on torch and candlelight, but the addition of these amethyst colored glass squares into the sidewalks above served as a light source. With street access via a staircase nearby, this portion of the tour is comprised of what once was a general store. Due to the lack of refrigeration, food products required canning or dehydration and salting processes in order to last or to be used during the winter season on the plains of Montana.
